Uttar Pradesh: Swami Prasad Maurya Tells Why He Resigned from Samajwadi Party

Lucknow: Swami Prasad Maurya, who stepped down as the Samajwadi Party's national general secretary last week, has now resigned from the party's primary membership and his position in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council. Maurya, in a letter addressed to party chief Akhilesh Yadav, expressed his decision based on the lack of communication and initiation of talks following his earlier resignation.

Maurya shared the letter on his social media platforms, stating, "Despite my resignation as national general secretary on February 13, there has been no effort to engage in discussions with me. Consequently, I am resigning from the primary membership of the party."

In a separate communication to the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council chairman, Maurya emphasized the moral basis for his resignation. "Having been elected as a member of the legislative council representing the Samajwadi Party, and considering my resignation from the primary membership of the party, I am also stepping down as an MLC on the basis of morality," he mentioned in the letter.

Maurya had initially resigned as the party's national general secretary on February 13, alleging discrimination by the leadership and a lack of support regarding his controversial statements on the Ramcharitmanas and the Ayodhya temple consecration ceremony.

Ideological differences with Akhilesh Yadav

After his resignation, he told media that the reason for quitting the party were "ideological differences with Akhilesh Yadav and the Samajwadi Party".

"I believe in clean politics. I saw Akhilesh Yadav. He was going against socialist ideology. I have the experience of working with Mulayam Singh Yadav as well. He was a staunch socialist leader. Those who are carrying forward his legacy are not able to follow his ideology. It is unfortunate," he added.

When he resigned from the post of the party's national general secretary, Maurya said that he would continue working to strengthen the Samajwadi Party without any post.

A member of the state legislative council, Maurya had joined the Samajwadi Party from the BJP before the 2022 polls and unsuccessfully contested the assembly polls from Fazilnagar.

He made controversial statements about the Ramcharitmanas and the Ayodhya temple consecration ceremony.
