Bengaluru Grapples with Dual Challenges: Sweltering Heat Amplifies Water Crisis

Adding to the ongoing water crisis, Bengaluru finds itself grappling with unprecedented high temperatures, prompting residents to overhaul their daily routines and reflect on the city's transformation over the past decade.

In recent days, daytime temperatures in Bengaluru have soared to 38 degrees Celsius, approaching the record high for April of 39.2 degrees set in 2016. These temperatures exceed the typical April averages by at least three degrees, signaling a notable shift in the city's climate patterns.

Attributing the spike in temperatures, Dr. N Puviarasan, a weather scientist with the India Meteorological Department, cited reduced rainfall from the North-east monsoon last year and a dry winter, partly due to climate change and El Nino conditions, which weaken monsoon winds and diminish rainfall.

Dr. Puviarasan also highlighted the role of rapid urbanization in exacerbating the city's heat levels.

Residents compelled to adapt to scorching conditions

Residents have been compelled to adapt to the scorching conditions, altering their routines to avoid the heat's discomfort. "My entire schedule has been disrupted. Previously, I would go for walks after lunch, but now it's unbearable even to step out of the office. Resorting to air conditioning is the only option," lamented one resident, reflecting on the city's contrasting climate a decade ago.

Another resident emphasized the importance of staying hydrated amidst the heat, underscoring the additional challenge posed by Bengaluru's water scarcity.

Night temps surpass those of Delhi and Gurugram

Moreover, Bengaluru is experiencing warmer nights, a departure from its typically pleasant evenings, with minimum temperatures reaching new highs, surpassing those of Delhi and Gurugram.

Amid hopes for relief, the city anticipates summer showers around April 14 to alleviate the oppressive heat.

This heatwave strikes Bengaluru, renowned for its moderate climate, as a double blow amid its water woes. Residents have been compelled to conserve water, curtailing activities such as bathing and cooking due to scarcity in their neighborhoods.

Haphazard and uncontrolled development

Some residents attribute the crisis to the haphazard implementation of development projects, emphasizing the urgent need to focus on replenishing groundwater levels. "While the emphasis has been on constructing apartments and roads, little attention has been paid to groundwater replenishment," lamented a resident, echoing concerns over unchecked urban development's impact on Bengaluru's environment.
