Katni Police Station Video: The political atmosphere in Madhya Pradesh has intensified following the release of a controversial video from the Katni Government Railway Police (GRP) station. Madhya Pradesh Congress President Jitu Patwari has launched a scathing attack on the state government, led by CM Mohan Yadav.
Patwari announced his intention to visit Katni to meet the family of the victims involved in the incident. He emphasized that, despite the crime being a year old, its severity remains undiminished. He said, "The crime is not small."
Patwari further criticized the ruling BJP government, accusing it of fostering an environment where atrocities against Dalits and tribals are commonplace. He condemned the actions of BJP leaders, alleging that they "urinate on Dalits and torture them."
Patwari also questioned the accountability of Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, who also serves as the state's Home Minister, asking, "What has he done in this matter so far?"
Planned Meeting with the Victim's Family
During a media briefing, Jitu Patwari reiterated his plans to meet the victim's family in Katni, expressing a desire to connect them with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. He demanded strict action against the station in-charge (TI) who allegedly assaulted a Dalit woman and her grandson. Patwari said that the house of the accused officer should be demolished.
Female Station In-Charge Removed Amid Growing Controversy
The controversy escalated after the video, showing a woman and her minor grandchild being beaten up in the Katni GRP police station, went viral on social media. Responding to the public uproar, SP Railway Jabalpur removed the GRP police station in-charge, Aruna Vahane, and initiated an investigation into the matter. The Congress party has continued to criticize Chief Minister Mohan Yadav and the BJP government over their handling of the incident.
Victim’s Family Speaks Out
Kusum Vanskar and her grandson, Deepraj Vanskar, who were allegedly beaten at the GRP police station, recently spoke to the media. They revealed that the incident occurred ten months ago, in October 2023. According to Kusum, they were summoned for questioning and were subjected to severe beatings throughout the night. The incident reportedly involved a 15-year-old minor from Jharra Tikuria and his grandmother, both of whom belong to the Dalit community.
Political Backlash Over Caste-Based Violence
The victims' Dalit identity has further fueled political tensions in the state. In response, Jitu Patwari has planned a visit to Katni to meet with Deepraj and his grandmother. He shared his concerns on social media, writing, "An incident of brutally beating this Dalit family by the station in-charge and staff of Katni GRP has come to light. Whenever unethical injustice/atrocity has been done to anyone, Congress has stood with the victim."
Aruna Vahane defends her actions
Meanwhile, GRP station in-charge Aruna Vahane defended her actions, claiming that the beatings were related to the criminal activities of Kusum Vanskar's son, Deepak Vanskar, who is also the father of the minor. According to Vahane, Deepak Vanskar is a notorious criminal with 17 cases registered against him, and he was a "most wanted" individual for the railway police with a reward of ten thousand rupees on his capture.
She stated that the family was brought to the station for questioning due to their alleged support of Deepak's criminal activities. While Deepak has been arrested and jailed, Kusum and her grandson are currently at home.
As the investigation unfolds, political rivalries and public outcry continue to mount, highlighting ongoing concerns over police conduct and the treatment of marginalized communities in Madhya Pradesh.
