In encouraging news about the startups in India, women are increasingly taking the helm of new enterprises. During the presentation of the country’s general budget on February 1, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman made several key announcements. She highlighted the growing role of women in the startup ecosystem.
Half of startups have at least one woman director
Just a day prior, the government unveiled the Economic Survey for 2024-25, which revealed that almost half (48 percent) of the country's startups have at least one woman director. This marks a substantial presence in a sector traditionally dominated by men.
According to the Economic Survey, out of 152,139 DPIIT-recognized startups, 73,151 have at least one woman director. This substantiates the increasing participation of women in entrepreneurship.
Startup culture in India has seen remarkable growth
The startup culture in India has seen remarkable growth in recent years, driven by a desire for independence and financial success that often exceeds what traditional jobs can offer. While the journey of startups is not without challenges—many do not achieve unicorn status—the rise of shows like "Shark Tank" has further popularized the startup trend, inspiring both men and women to engage in this dynamic field.
Fostering an inclusive entrepreneurial environment
Finance Minister Sitharaman's budget also stressed the importance of supporting farmers, youth, and women, reinforcing the government's commitment to fostering an inclusive entrepreneurial environment. As of December, data from DPIIT indicated that out of one lakh 57 thousand startups in India, around 73 thousand are led by women, all recognized under the Startup India initiative. This trend signifies a positive shift towards greater gender diversity in entrepreneurship.
