Bombay High Court Grants Interim Bail to Jet Airways Founder Naresh Goyal

Naresh Goyal, the founder of Jet Airways, has been granted interim bail for two months by the Bombay High Court in a money laundering case. Currently admitted to Reliance Hospital, Goyal has been required to provide a bond of Rs 1 lakh and is restricted from leaving Mumbai without court permission.

Goyal, citing medical and humanitarian grounds, had requested bail, highlighting both his and his wife Anita Goyal's battle with cancer. However, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) opposed bail, suggesting a potential extension of Goyal's hospital stay.

The court, after a hearing on May 3, had reserved its decision. Previously, in February, the Special Court had denied bail to Goyal, though allowing him medical treatment in a private hospital.

Goyal's Legal Journey

Goyal was arrested by the ED in September 2023 in connection with a money laundering case involving Rs 538 crore with Canara Bank. His wife, Anita Goyal, was also arrested by the ED in November 2023. However, considering Goyal's age and health, he was promptly granted bail.

On January 6, Goyal told the Mumbai special court that his health was deteriorating due to cancer. He mentioned feeling hopeless and expressed a longing for his wife, who is also battling cancer at an advanced stage.

Legal Arguments for Bail

During the May 3 hearing, Goyal's lawyer, Harish Salve, emphasized the seriousness of the allegations against Goyal but underscored his wife's critical health condition, stating that she has only a few months left to live. Salve argued that in such circumstances, Goyal should be permitted to be with his wife.
