UP Lok Sabha Election-2024: Priyanka Gandhi Takes Charge in Congress Campaign for Amethi and Raebareli; How Successful Will She Be?

UP Lok Sabha Election-2024: Despite not being the candidate herself, senior Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is at the forefront of the party's campaign in the crucial seats of Amethi and Raebareli in Uttar Pradesh. While her brother Rahul Gandhi contests from Raebareli, the party's choice for Amethi is Kishori Lal Sharma, a loyalist of the Gandhi family.

Priyanka to conduct a series of "nukkad sabhas"

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is slated to conduct a series of "nukkad sabhas" today on Wednesday, initiating an intense outreach campaign. She arrived in Raebareli on Monday and has since engaged in extensive meetings with local Congress leaders at the Bhuemau guesthouse.

'Your 24 hours now belong to me'

During a meeting on Monday, Priyanka reportedly declared her commitment to staying in Raebareli until May 18, emphasizing the importance of a robust fight in both constituencies. She rallied Congress workers, stating, "Your 24 hours now belong to me. I will push you, guide you, but stand by you firmly. My doors are open to you anytime. This election is about safeguarding the Constitution. BJP aims to dismantle reservation benefits."

Raebareli has been a stronghold for Congress, with only three losses since 1952. Despite challenges, Sonia Gandhi secured victory in 2014 and 2019, subsequently moving to the Rajya Sabha due to health concerns. Rahul Gandhi, now the party's candidate, faces Uttar Pradesh minister Dinesh Pratap Singh in a bid to retain the legacy of Feroze Gandhi and Indira Gandhi.

Cong confronts a stiffer competition in Amethi

In Amethi, Congress confronts a stiffer competition. Previously held by Sanjay Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, and Sonia Gandhi, the seat was seized by BJP's Smriti Irani in 2019. Irani, the BJP candidate once more, has launched an aggressive campaign well before Congress finalized its candidate. Reacting to Congress' choice, Irani expressed confidence in her victory, claiming the absence of Gandhis from the fray indicates their pre-election defeat.

People of Amethi hold a special place in my heart: Sharma

Kishori Lal Sharma, a grassroots leader with prior experience serving as an MP's representative in Amethi and Raebareli, seeks the chance to serve the people. "The people of Amethi hold a special place in my heart. I've been here for 40 years. I'm following the directives of our top leadership. I just want the opportunity to serve the people," Sharma stated.
