Japan Allows Saliva Based Covid-19 Test

Currently Japan nasal swab mainly used for test and sneeze at time of collecting samples.

It may expose medical workers to risk of potential infection.  Japan government on Tuesday approved saliva based test for new coronavirus offering a safer and simpler way to diagnose infection.

It also boost the number of test carried out using polymerase chain reaction technology.

Now saliva based PCR test can be given to those who have symptoms for up to 9 days.

But it is not clear how much change would it boost to overall testing capacity immediately.

This will vastly reduce burden on patient as well as sample collecting institution. As of May 2020 govt conducted 3.4 test per 1000 people which is far below Italy and US according to Oxford university data.
