Mathura: Lathmar Holi will be played today in Barsana, the city of Radha Rani. Devotees from far and wide have reached here to see this Holi. Holi festival will be celebrated on 8th March across the country. But in Braj celebrations start from Basant Panchami.

Lathmar Holi will be celebrated in Nandgaon and Barsana towns in Mathura-district of Uttar Pradesh. The towns are located some 42 kms from Mathura and are extremely popular for the celebrations during Holi.

The natives are known for their interesting way of playing Holi with not only colours but also sticks. Lathmar Holi means playing Holi with stick and colours.

Today the youths of Nand village will come to Barsana. The women here, called Hurriyarin, would drive them away with sticks. They beat men in a funny way. The youths try to save them from lathi. If they are caught, they are made to dance in women's costumes. This is how Lathmar Holi is celebrated.

There are also competitions of songs and music between women and men on this day. Men save them from the lathi attacks by the Huriyarins with the shield they bring with them.

Laddu Holi played

Laddu Holi was played here on Monday. BJP MP Hema Malini was also present. Laddu Holi is played a day before Lathmar Holi of Barsana. The Huriyares of Nandgaon come to play Holi with the Huriyaris of Barsana.

The belief behind Laddu Holi is that in Dwapar Yuga, Radha Rani and her friends made up their mind to play Holi with Krishna. For this, a messenger was sent to Lord Krishna's village Nandgaon to invite him. When God accepted the invitation to play Holi in Nandgaon.

After this messenger Panda came and said Krishna had accepted the invitation to play Holi in Barsana, then the residents of Barsana became happy and started throwing laddus at each other.
