My Story Is Every Woman's Story, I've Full Faith In The Progress Of Women: Droupadi Murmu

New Delhi: President Droupadi Murm said on International Women's Day on Wednesday that every woman's story is my story, I believe in the progress of women.

President Murmu said this in an article on the indomitable spirit of Indian women today. She said that my election as the President of the world's largest democracy is a part of the saga of women empowerment.

Women soon realise they have less opportunities compared to boys

She said, “I have been concerned about the status of women in society since childhood. While on the one hand a girl child gets lots of love and affection from all sides and is even worshiped on auspicious occasions, on the other hand she soon realizes that she has less opportunities in life as compared to boys of her age.

Murmu said on the one hand women are respected for their innate intelligence, even appreciated as the pivot of the family, taking care of everyone in the whole family. But on the other hand, she has a very limited, if any, role in important decisions related to the family, even her own life.

She said that in the 21st century, when we have made unimaginable progress in every field, till date no woman has been able to become the head of state or government in many countries.

Women have to prove their mettle in two domains simultaneously

Murmu said that innumerable women are contributing to nation building by working in their chosen fields. They are leading corporate units and even serving in the armed forces. The only difference is that they have to prove their mettle and excellence in two domains simultaneously – in their careers as well as in their homes. They don't even complain, but they definitely expect the society to trust them.

As we move upwards, the number of females gradually decreases

Murmu said that we have a good representation of women in decision-making institutions at the grassroots level. But as we move upwards, the number of females gradually decreases. This fact is as true for political institutions as it is for bureaucracy, judiciary and the corporate world.

We have to break free from ingrained prejudices based on gender inequality

She said that I strongly believe that there is a need to change the mindset prevailing in the society. In order to build a peaceful and prosperous society, it is necessary to understand and break free from ingrained prejudices based on gender inequality.

She said that I have seen that if women get the opportunity, they often outdo men in the field of education. She added that not only economic progress but climate action would accelerate if women were included in decision-making.

World would be a happier place if women were made equal partners

Murmu said I believe that our world would be a happier place if women were made equal partners in the progress of humanity.

The story of women's emancipation has moved slowly, often with painful tardiness, she said. She said that this journey is moving only in the straight direction, never returned in the opposite direction.

Contradictory attitudes

She said that during the past years in the environment outside the home, first as a student, then as a teacher and later as a social worker, I could not help but be surprised by such contradictory attitudes. Sometimes I realized that most of us, on a personal level, take for granted the equality of men and women.

At the social level, old customs and traditions are not leaving us

During my lifetime, I have seen most of the people moving towards the progressive concept of equality. However, at the social level, old customs and traditions, like old habits, are not leaving us.

She said that this is the sad story of all the women of the world. Every second child of Mother Earth, a woman, begins her life amidst obstacles. In the twenty-first century, where we have made unimaginable progress in every field, till date no woman has been able to become the head of state or government in many countries.

Going to school becomes a matter of life and death for a girl in some parts of world

On the other extreme, unfortunately, there are places in the world where women are still considered the lower part of humanity; And going to school also becomes a matter of life and death for a girl.

She said that today I would like to urge each and every one of you to dedicate yourself to bring a change in your family, neighborhood or workplace. Any change that brings a smile to a child's face, a change that increases her chances of getting ahead in life.
