Dev Uthani Ekadashi is a special day for Hindus, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, who is seen as the nurturer, preserver, and sustainer of the universe. Every month has two Ekadashi days: one during the dark phase of the moon (Krishna Paksha) and one during the bright phase (Shukla Paksha). This means there are 24 Ekadashi days in a year. This year, Dev Uthani Ekadashi will be celebrated on November 1.
On this day, it is believed that Lord Vishnu wakes up from a long sleep and starts taking care of the world again. It is believed that praying to him and fasting on this day can help reduce the problems and bring happiness.
Many important ceremonies, like weddings and housewarming, also start from this day. Dev Uthani Ekadashi is sometimes called Devutthana Ekadashi or Prabodhini Ekadashi.
