US brings charges against Indian national in plot to kill Sikh separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun

On Wednesday, federal prosecutors in  America  brought charges against Nikhil Gupta, a 52-year-old Indian national, in connection with his involvement in a thwarted plot to assassinate a Sikh separatist on US soil.  The charges include murder-for-hire, which carries a maximum 10-year prison sentence, and conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire, also with a maximum sentence of 10 years, according to Matthew G. Olsen, the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York. Gupta is accused of conspiring from India to orchestrate the assassination of a Sikh separatist leader residing in New York City. The intended victim, a US citizen of Indian origin, had publicly advocated for a sovereign state for Sikhs.   New Delhi: The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved Central Sector Scheme for providing Drones to the Women Self Help Groups (SHGs), with an outlay of Rs. 1261 Crore for the period from 2024-25 to 2025-26. The scheme aims to provide drones to 15,000 selected Women SHGs during the period 2023-24 to 2025-2026 for providing rental services to farmers for agriculture purpose. Thus farmers will also benefit as they would be able to use drones for agricultural purposes by taking them on rent.    Agri-drones can be used to spray chemicals as they have reservoirs, which can be filled with fertilizers and pesticides for spraying on crops in very little time, as compared to traditional methods. Uttarakhand Tunnel Rescue: The 17-day long ordeal involving the 41 workers trapped in the Silkyara tunnel of Uttarakhand finally ended on Tuesday. The first of the 41 workers was brought out of the tunnel by rescuers at 7:50 pm. The joy of getting a new lease of life could be clearly seen on the face of the workers. All 41 laborers trapped in Silkyara-Dandalgaon Tunnel of Uttarakhand since November 12 have been rescued. The first laborer was taken out at 7.50 pm. He was sent to the hospital by ambulance. Mumbai: A 20-year-old girl undergoing 'Agniveer' training in the Indian Navy allegedly died of suicide by hanging herself in her hostel room at 'INS Hamla' in Mumbai. The police gave this information on Tuesday. An official said that the girl , hailing from Kerala, was undergoing training at INS Hamla in Malvani area in the western suburb of Malad. Police said that the girl allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself in her hostel room on Monday morning. A police officer said that no suicide note was recovered from the spot and it appears that the girl  committed suicide due to personal reasons. He told that after completing her initial training, the girl was taking training at this center for the last 15 days. This assurance came on the 17th day of rescue efforts as of Tuesday. Naseem, one of the workers said that they have already done 5 metres of manual drilling work so far, and 51 metres have been completed in totality. "We've completed 51 meters of drilling. We've manually drilled 5 meters inside. Progressing through the 800 mm pipe, we have around 6 meters of drilling left. Rescue efforts for the 41 trapped workers in the collapsed section of the Uttarkashi tunnel have entered their 16th day, with a shift in focus to vertical drilling as part of a multi-pronged strategy. Commencing on Sunday afternoon, the vertical drilling of the Silkyara hill aims to excavate approximately 110 meters for the workers' rescue. Progress has been swift, with the machine successfully penetrating 20 meters of the hill, leaving around 86 meters to be drilled. The decision to employ vertical drilling followed the failure of the American auger drill  machine  in horizontally drilling the tunnel. Bhopal woke up to a rainy morning on Monday. Sun tried to peep in during the day here as clouds hovered. Light rainfall was registered during the intervening night of Sunday and Monday with cloudy and drizzly conditions continuing into the morning. Light showers occurred intermittently during the day with day temperature dipping and people forced to wear woolens.  Although day temperature fell, the night temperature inched up by 2.7 degrees Celsius, settling at 16.6 degrees. Meteorologists attribute this rise to the cloud cover prevalent during the night.
